House says no to speaker’s tax reform plan:

State House Speaker Glenn Richardson’s tax reform plan, pared down to a mere ghost of its former self, died Wednesday on the House floor.

By Wednesday, though, all that was left was eliminating the tax on motor vehicle tags and limiting the growth of local government budgets. That tag tax would be replaced by a $20 fee, half of which would go to fund trauma care.

Thanks to all the good Democrats who held strong to defeat this wretched thing. According to Tondee’s, there were 7 Democrats who broke rank and voted for the speaker’s plan: Reps. Ellis Black, Bob Bryant, Amy Carter, Kevin Levitas, Bobby Parham, Alan Powell and Jay Shaw. Only one Republican - Rep. Tom Dickson, R-Cohutta, voted with the Democratic opposition.
