Promoting this from the comment thread. Looks like the progressive community was duped by Freepers. Yesterday we published a blog post about the controversy over the photo of Obama in traditional Somali garb while he was making an official visit, whose source, according to CNN, was none other than right-wing gossip columnist Matt Drudge, who alleged he got it from a Clinton staffer.
Well, thanks to the transparency of the web, it looks like the source was none other than Freepers who posted the photo on their site Saturday nite at 7:24PM. Then a commenter states on Sunday:
Good Job, it needs to get to Drudge,M.Malkin,Debbie Schussel etc….I want to see his explanation on this.
Then it shows up on Drudge but attributed to Clinton? I smell a rat, er, a .
Then on Monday, after pages and pages of filth and racist comments, they’re all a-glee that it got out, but miffed they didn’t get credit:
To: bannie
Look, told ya’ it was going to go nation-wide. Saw this when I logged on to AOL right now. Front page:It is annoying they are crediting it to Drudge and the Clinton campaign. We all know it was bannie from Free Republic who got there first.
The media are such weenies.

Couple things:
1. The Freepers suck at attacks. If the point of the photo was to destroy Obama and the Dem Party, they shouldn’t be taking credit. Better to leave it out there accredited to Clinton and have Dems ripping each other apart over it. But, no one said they were smart.
2. It’s still possible that some volunteer/staffer on the Clinton campaign saw the photo on FR and used it to their advantage. I only say this based on the non-denial denial, but given Drudge’s history.. I’d say this is unlikely.

It’s not clear to me why the Clinton campaign could not see fit to categorically deny the connection to the photograph in question, given that no such connection appears to exist. Many of their strategic moves have left me puzzled.
I know a number of fine, upstanding rats. I object to them being compared to the Freepers.

here’s my take on that– they were being careful– how would it have looked if they categorically denied it and then it was discovered it was some rogue staffer in one of the upcoming primary states? The uproar over that would have been even worse. They denied it came from the top and said they had 700+ staffers… but they also challenged the press to come up with an independent report that verified it came from them…

How does a post on Free Republic preclude Clinton’s campaign from being the source?
Why are you contorting yourself to excuse Clinton’s naked attempt to stir up xenophobic emotions about Obama?
Her campaign will not issue a unequivocal denial. That means they’re bullshitting.

I think she just issued the “unequivocal denial”.

I believe she just said she knew nothing about it.
That is not a denial that it came from her campaign.

I haven’t read her response, is there a link anywhere? This really is such a non issue to me i don’t even care to look. Really? This is the best “attack” we can do? Lame.

Rogue staffer, republican, whatever. I have three email now from Obama (one direct, two through bundlers) asking me to donate because of the Clintons’ unfairness.
Why is this picture exciting? There have been similar pictures shown before. In fact, a picture from the same event showing the same thing was linked on this site in May of 2007. http://www.blogfordemocracy.org/2007/05/breaking_news_obamas_middle_na.html
Take that, Drudge.

Oh my God MOTS. I totally forgot about that, even though the picture looked sort of familiar.

This would be totally hysterical if we hadn’t spent an entire day kvetching about it. How foolish is this?
I’m going back to the Oscar thread.
